John Atchison

A zealous advocate of continual training, John recognized early in his career the importance of training other stylists to develop their haircutting skills. With a business philosophy built on teamwork, he started by educating his own staff when he opened his New York salon in 1976.

Over the years, John Atchison has earned an international reputation as a leading hairstylist and educator. Working with the solid foundation acquired at Vidal Sassoon's in New York and London, he became a master at the craft of haircutting and styling, dedicating himself to the development of the John Atchison Method of precision haircutting for all textures of hair until he perfected the technique.

With the demand for his service, Mr. Atchison was compelled to open a second salon in Los Angeles to become "hairstylist to the stars," and created signature coiffures for some of the most visible faces in the country. To dedicate himself to educating other stylists, John presently operates only in the New York venue. He is sought after to teach at all the major hair shows nationwide because of the excellent reputation that he has built up over 25 years as a creative and distinguished entrepreneur.

Deeply committed to the cosmetology industry, Mr. Atchison established a training center for industry professionals to heighten their haircutting skills and motivate them to strive for excellence. He has trained hundreds of stylists in Europe, Canada, the Caribbean, and the U.S. in precision hair-cutting techniques for all textures of hair. His concept has elevated precision haircutting to the forefront of the hair care industry.

An addition to the company is the John Atchison Prescription Haircare System, a line of products infused with the therapeutic properties of Palma Christi oil. The System made its debut after many years of painstaking research and testing.

Even before any ad campaign, calls were received daily from around the country and the Caribbean inquiring about the products after a mention of them in Essence magazine. Sold exclusively in select hair salons across the country, the line includes OFTEN CONDITIONER, pure PALMA CHRISTI OIL (to treat and strengthen hair), CREMES, OFTEN SHINE DROPS & SPRAYS, OFTEN SHAMPOO (with pure aloe for daily use) and OFTEN FINISHING CONDITIONING RINSE (for daily use).

Mr. Atchison has been features on TV talk shows including Good Day New York (FOX), Live with Regis & Kathie Lee, CNN, and "Our Voices" (BET) to name a few. In response to requests from advertisers, he appeared in a counter video display with acclaimed songstress Nancy Wilson featuring a Flori Roberts Cosmetics product - "My Everything Crème."

Editorial coverage has exposed millions of women to his precision haircutting theory and prompted his appearance on the beauty pages of such publications as VOGUE, ESSENCE, MADEMOISELLE, EBONY, THE NEW YORK TIMES, WOMEN'S WEAR DAILY, GLAMOUR, BLACK ENTERPRISE, REDBOOK, and numerous hair care trade publications.

Mr. Atchison has been an avid fundraiser for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Food For Survival, Fresh Air Fund, the Dance Theatre of Harlem, the NAACP, and the Boys Choir of Harlem. He regularly donates percentages of gross sales to community organizations.

He has served as chairman of the National Cosmetology Education Council (NCEC) formed by a group of concerned hairstylists from around the country. Among the community services provided by NCEC is a mentoring program to empower young hairstylists entering the field. Cosmetologists are trained to evaluate their haircutting skills, taught the importance of giving back to their communities, and encouraged to always strive for excellence. He is also on the Board of the Christian Cosmetology International Association.
